Young People Are Increasingly Choosing Holiday Work in the Cleaning Industry

More and more young people are discovering that holiday work in the cleaning industry is both surprisingly enjoyable and a great learning experience. Bas (20) and Jelle (17), the sons of Esmar, are among them. They are spending their summer holidays working for Breedweer as part of the cleaning team. We asked them why they chose this holiday job and how they’re enjoying the experience.

Good Pay and Flexible Hours

Bas is studying to become a primary school teacher, coaches youth football teams at Reiger Boys, and works at Albert Heijn. Even so, he still found time for holiday work in the cleaning industry.

“I work during the hours when I’d otherwise be doing nothing, and it pays well,” he says.

His workplace? The office of media agency Wij zijn MEO in Alkmaar.

“On my first day, Mobile Site Supervisor Gairoen came along to show me everything. It’s relaxed work: dusting, cleaning, and mopping. Afterwards, I can just go and play football with my friends.”

Cleaning Holiday Jobs Fit Perfectly Around Your Schedule

Jelle, who is about to complete his final year of pre-university education (VWO), easily combines his job at Plaza snack bar with holiday work in the cleaning industry.

“I work in the mornings at Delftechniek in Heerhugowaard and later in the day at the snack bar. It works out really well,” he says.

“Cleaning is practical work. You see the results straight away, and it’s great working with the other employees.”

A Great Choice for Anyone

Both of them highly recommend holiday work in the cleaning industry.

“You get plenty of freedom, the pay is good, and you still have lots of time left to enjoy your holidays.”

And their mother, Esmar? She just hopes her sons will start dusting and cleaning at home a little more often on their own—although that might be asking a bit too much.
